Cavs win 17th straight at home on Farrell's slam

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Jeremy Farrell's grand slam broke a 4-4 tie and capped a five-run fifth inning as the No. 19 Virginia (19-4, 5-4) baseball team finished off a sweep of Boston College with an 8-6 win.

The win was Virginia's 17th straight at home, which sets a school record.

Dan Grovatt went 3-for-3 and scored three times, while Farrell had two hits and drove in four.

Garret Smith had three hits to lead the Eagles (9-11, 2-7).

No. 3 FSU 18, Va. Tech 12

BLACKSBURG -- For the third time in three games, one big inning propelled third-ranked Florida State to a high-scoring ACC win over Virginia Tech. This time it was a six-run sixth.

Three Seminoles (19-2, 9-0) -- Buster Posey, Dennis Guinn and Tony Delmonico -- had four hits apiece, with Guinn driving in five on a pair of home runs.

Austin Wates, Ty Hohman and Michael Seaborn each recorded three hits for Tech (7-15, 0-9), with Wates and Seaborn tallying three runs apiece and Hohman driving in three.

GOLF

UVa women place 10th

ATHENS, Ga. -- The 23rd-ranked Virginia women's golf team finished 10th at Georgia's Liz Murphey Classic. Virginia shot 307 during Sunday's final round to complete the 54-hole event at 931. Georgia and Purdue tied for first at 900.

The Cavaliers were led by freshman Calle Nielson who shot 72 for the second straight day to finish fifth at 6-over 222.

W&L men finish 9th

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee men's golf team finished in ninth out of 26 teams at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational.

The Generals finished with a 300-301-312--913 and Methodist claimed the team title with a three-day score of 871.

Senior Nathaniel James finished in third place with a score of 70-71-76--217.

UVa men 7th

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Virginia men's golf team is in seventh place after the opening round at Arizona's National Invitational. The Cavaliers shot 4-over 292 in the event that features 15 teams.

TCU grabbed a big early lead, finishing at 13-under 275 to lead second-place New Mexico and UNLV by 11 shots.

Virginia was led by a pair of even-par 72s turned in by Greg Carlin and Henry Smart. They are tied for 17th overall.

Radford women 11th

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Radford women's golf team finished 11th at William and Mary's First Market Bank Intercollegiate.

Freshman Hannah Coles led Radford and tied for 17th overall, shooting a 160 (75-85).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Delaware 8, Va. Tech 7

BLACKSBURG -- Junior midfielder Rachel Culp tied her career high with four goals, but Virginia Tech (2-9) could not avoid its third straight one-goal loss while falling to Delaware (5-2). SWIMMING

Botzum takes sixth

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Jessica Botzum concluded her Virginia Tech career Saturday by finishing sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Division I women's championships, breaking her own ACC record with a time of 2:10.43.

She earned All-America honors for the second time at the meet and the fifth time in her career. Botzum, who was fifth in the 100 breaststroke Friday, helped Tech finish in 23rd place.

Botzum had also been part of the 13th-place 200 medley relay team and the 14th-place 400 medley relay team. Her ACC record Saturday was the second one broken by Tech at the meet; Sara Smith broke a 10-year-old ACC record in the 50 freestyle prelims (22.38) before finishing 16th in the final.

Tech broke seven school records, including two by Botzum and two by Megan Newell.

Sweet finishes 4th

OXFORD, Ohio -- Washington and Lee's Alex Sweet took fourth in the 100 freestyle Saturday at the NCAA Division III men's championships, earning All-America honors.

Sweet, who won the 50 freestyle title Thursday, was also part of the 400 freestyle relay team that earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish.

Sweet had also been part of the eighth-place 800 freestyle relay team and the fourth-place 200 freestyle relay team.

Tim McGlaston, who took seventh in the 50 freestyle, was 15th in the 100 freestyle Saturday.
