Tech shocks Terps with sweep
The Hokies make up an 11-point second-half deficit to knock off Maryland for the second time this year.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland had to bring out a mop in the first half. Virginia Tech brought out the broom in the second half.
The Tech men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Wednesday, erasing an 11-point second-half deficit to beat Maryland 69-65 at Comcast Center.
The Hokies, coming off a 92-53 loss at North Carolina on Saturday, swept the regular-season series. They had not won in College Park since January 1951.
"Sweeping them, ... beating them here at Maryland, two big milestones," said A.D. Vassallo, who had 19 points.
Malcolm Delaney and Jeff Allen (14 points, 14 rebounds) raised their arms in triumph at game's end. Hank Thorns bumped chests with a teammate.
"It meant a lot to us," coach Seth Greenberg said. "We lost three games in a row. We got embarrassed at North Carolina. ... It meant a lot, to sweep Maryland. Look at those banners. That's a Hall of Fame coach over there [Gary Williams]. It means a lot to us. It's an area we've got to recruit. ... It meant a lot to me."
Tech reserve Dorenzo Hudson vomited on himself and on the court late in the first half, causing a lengthy delay as the floor was mopped. "Fear the mop," wrote a Maryland student on the back of his sign, altering the Terrapins' "Fear the turtle" motto.
"I turned to [Hudson]. I said, 'I've got to be honest with you. I've never seen someone lose their lunch,' " Greenberg said.
Hudson left the court but returned to the game in the second half, wearing a different jersey.
Unlike last weekend, Tech (15-11, 6-6 ACC) did not have reason to feel sick at game's end. Point guard Malcolm Delaney had said after Saturday's loss that some of the Hokies "gave up" in that game.
"We didn't give up [Wednesday] and we definitely played harder than we did Saturday," Vassallo said. "We played with energy and desire.
"I ain't felt comfortable till today, till we finally won, since Saturday. I've been bothered by that loss. ... To come down here and win after that, that definitely says a lot about the character of the team."
Tech had lost at Maryland five straight times.
"We've done a lot of things this year that I haven't done in my career, and I wanted to come up here and get a win," said Deron Washington, who had 12 points. "We needed to come up here and get this win so we could get things going and get back on track."
The Hokies, who trailed by 11 points with 13:51 to go, went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 47-45 with 8:14 to go.
Down 51-45, Tech went on another 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 53-51 on a Vassallo 3-pointer with 3:32 left.
Maryland answered with a Greivis Vasquez 3-pointer, but Tech scored eight straight points to take the lead for good. Allen, who had been challenged by Greenberg before the game to play better, made a jumper and Thorns sank a 3-pointer to give Tech a 58-54 lead. After a Washington block, Vassallo made another 3-pointer for a 61-54 cushion with 1:28 to go.
Eric Hayes of Maryland made a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 64-61 with 33 seconds left, but Vassallo made two free throws and Allen made one of two free throws for a 67-61 lead with 21.7 seconds left.
It was Tech's third ACC road win of the season and second sweep; Tech also swept Virginia, winning at UVa last month for the first time since 1968.
Maryland (17-10, 7-5), which led by 14 in the first half, had won five of its last six games. Vasquez had 25 points and Bambale Osby 18 for Maryland.
Tech improved to 7-6 this season in games decided by six or fewer points or by overtime.
Greenberg, whose team fell behind 16-4, picked up his third technical foul of the season after complaining to an official midway through the first half. The Terps' resulting two free throws made the score 24-14.
J.T. Thompson missed the game with a sprained ankle he suffered in practice Monday. He might return for Saturday's game with Georgia Tech.
