Marlins clean up Maroons on boards
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan dominated Roanoke on the boards Saturday, paving the way to an easy 75-55 ODAC win.
The Marlins outrebounded the Maroons 46-26, Roanoke's lowest rebounding total and largest deficit all season. As a result, Wesleyan outscored Roanoke 16-2 in second-chance points.
The Marlins (16-5, 10-4 ODAC) had four scorers in double-figures, led by Tyler Fantin with 17 points.
The Maroons were led by freshman Melvin Felix, who finished with 18 points and three steals in just 11 minutes of play.
Josh LaPorte finished with 10 points.
Free-throw shooting woes continued for Roanoke (15-5, 9-4), as the Maroons connected on just 50 percent for the game.
Randolph-Macon 78, W&L 66
ASHLAND, Va. -- Justin Short scored 22 points and Jeremy Dixon added 14 points and 10 rebound to lead the Yellow Jackets over the Generals in an ODAC game.
The Yellow Jackets (16-4, 10-3 ODAC) also got clutch play from David Carlson, who made 4 of 7 3-pointers and finished with 16 points.
The Generals (12-7, 8-4) were led by Greg Bienemann, who scored 22 points. Femi Kusimo added 14 points off the bench.
Randolph-Macon led 41-32 at halftime behind eight 3-pointers, including four from Carlson and three scored by Short.
The Jackets extended their lead in the second half, outscoring W&L 19-9 in the first 7:48 of play.
The Generals, though, chipped away and cut the lead to nine points when a Kusimo score made the score 68-59 with 4:40 left.
The Jackets converted 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Chowan 77, SVU 65
BUENA VISTA -- Southern Virginia University fell behind early and could not recover as the Knights fell to Chowan.
Chris Kenon had 18 points to lead Chowan.
The Hawks (11-12) out-rebounded the Knights 52-31.
Bryce Pendleton scored 23 points -- including 19 in the second half -- to lead the Knights, while brother Chris Pendleton scored 20. J.J. Holt added 10 points and five steals for SVU (9-13).
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half as SVU shot 22.7 percent and Chowan 30.6 percent.
Ferrum 70, Methodist 69
FERRUM -- Keith Crump hit an off-balance jumper with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Panthers the USA South win over the Monarchs.
Crump had 19 points, while Jerrell Wade had a game-high 22 points for Ferrum (11-10, 5-3 USA South).
Travis McBryde and Billy McDade led Methodist (13-8, 5-3) with 15 points each.
