WR commits to Virginia Tech; 2 linemen pick UVa

The final weekend before national signing date yielded commitments for both Virginia Tech and Virginia, the most prominent coming from wide receiver Randall Dunn from Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach.

Dunn, rated the No. 15 prospect in Virginia by The Roanoke Times, committed to the Hokies. Ocean Lakes coach Jim Prince said Dunn (6-foot-3 12, 220 pounds) picked Tech over UVa and North Carolina.

Dunn had 38 receptions for 856 yards and scored 13 touchdowns as a senior, his only full season of football.

"He always had been a basketball player," Prince said, "and it wasn't till the fifth game of his junior year that he asked if I would let him come out for the team. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

"The first time he touched a ball, he took a kickoff back 75 yards for a touchdown."

Dunn is the 14th player off The Roanoke Times' Top 25 to commit to Tech and the Hokies will find out today if his teammate, quarterback Marcus Davis, makes it 15.

Davis has narrowed his choices to Tech and Penn State.

Tech has a total of 30 commitments, not counting two 2007 signees, Alonzo Tweedy and Courtney Prince, who enrolled at Tech this month.

Virginia's commitments were from Mike Price, a 6-5, 265-pound offensive and defensive lineman from Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, and 6-6, 215-pound defensive end Tory Allen from Lovejoy, Ga.

Price, rated the No. 83 prospect on The Roanoke Times' list, had committed to Division I-A newcomer Old Dominion one week earlier. Allen was a basketball player exclusively until this year, when he attracted late interest from UVa, North Carolina and Georgia Tech.

Price became the third in-state player in a UVa recruiting class that numbers 19.

Price made second-team All-Eastern Region as an offensive lineman this year but thinks he had a better year as a defensive end. He said he had 75 tackles, including eight sacks, and blocked six kicks.

National signing day is Wednesday.
