Hokies chasing Top 10 golf finish

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Virginia Tech shot a second round 292 Friday afternoon, scrambling up five places into 13th place in the NCAA East Regional.
The Hokies shaved several strokes off an opening day 304, keeping alive their hopes of a top- 10 finish and the possibility of advancing to the NCAA finals in Williamsburg.
Georgia leads the event with a two-day total 574.
Virginia Tech is four shots out of the top-10 at 597.
Senior Ryan Sypniewski's 147 ties him at 25th, ten strokes behind individual leader Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech. Sophomore Drew Weaver is only one shot off his teammate, but in a tie for 35th.
James finishes 19th for W&L
FISHERS, Ind. -- Washington and Lee junior Nathaniel James shot a final round 79, his highest total in four days of the NCAA Division III championship, to finish with a 19-over-307 and in 19th place.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Applegate advances for Washington and Lee
FREDERICKSBURG -- With a pair of Friday afternoon wins, Washington and Lees's Emily Applegate advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tennis championship.
Applegate defeated Jenna Mezin of Wellesley in straight sets, then came back after dropping her first set to defeat Jackie Shtemberg of The College of New Jersey.
The senior faces St. Benedict's Megan Tiegs today.
In doubles competition Applegate and Kristen McClung lost in the first round.
Generals Katie Tabb and Ginny Wortham also lost their first round singles matches.
SOFTBALL
DePauw 4, Moravian 2
SALEM -- DePauw's Carolyn Bartlett broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Laura Schlensker.
The Tigers (37-5) added an insurance run in the same inning when Chelsy Patterson hit an RBI single to score pinch runner Erin Ketchem.
Pitcher Megan Soultz set a new single-season record for DePauw with her 19th win of the season.
The Tigers meet Linfield today at 4 p.m., and Moravian heads to the elimination round to face Emory at 11 a.m.
UW-Eau Claire 9, Rhode Island 1, 5 innings
SALEM -- Mallory McKinney hit a bases-loaded single to score two in the bottom of the fifth and UW-Eau Claire (36-12) won by 8-run rule.
McKinney also earned the victory from the mound, striking out four.
The Bluegolds play Washington University today at 6:30 p.m., and Rhode Island faces Plattsburg in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. today.
Washington 8, Plattsburg 0, 5 innings
SALEM -- Laurel Sagartz pitched five perfect innings as Washington team defeated Plattsburg by the 8-run rule.
Sagartz finished the game with nine strikeouts and dropped her Division III leading ERA to 0.29. She is now 29-1 on the season.
HIGH SCHOOLS
Greenberg will speak at William Fleming event
Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Seth Greenberg will be the guest speaker for the William Fleming boys basketball ring ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Holiday Inn. The Colonels won the Group AA state championship in March.
