Collge briefs: Ferrum 6th seed in NCAA regional
The Ferrum baseball team is seeded sixth in the seven-team NCAA Division III regional it will host Wednesday through Saturday.
The USA South champion Panthers (23-16) will face second-seeded York (Pa.) at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday in the double-elimination tournament. York is 29-12.
ODAC champ Bridgewater (21-21), the fifth seed, will meet fourth-seeded Methodist (29-13) at 10:30 a.m.
Second-seeded Salisbury (32-8) plays seventh-seeded Villa Julie (24-20) at 5 p.m. Top-seeded Emory (35-7) will wrap up Day 1 by facing the Bridgewater-Methodist loser at 8:15 p.m.
Hokies to play Canisius
The Virginia Tech softball team will play a different team in its NCAA tournament opener Friday than first announced.
On Monday, the NCAA tournament committee announced it had “inadvertently” given the wrong seedings to Fullerton and Canisius. Fullerton (34-20), which is 26th in the RPI, has now been made the third seed and Canisius (27-19), which is 141st in the RPI, the fourth seed. So Tech will play Canisius at 5 p.m. Friday, with OSU opening against Fullerton.
Tech women draw Minnesota
The ACC and Big Ten announced a four-year deal to pit the women’s basketball teams from each conference against each other.
Virginia Tech will host 2007 WNIT participant Minnesota on Nov. 30. Virginia will host Wisconsin that same day; the Badgers beat UVa in the WNIT quarterfinals in March.
