Miscues doom Radford vs. VMI
The Highlanders commit 41 turnovers to drop the Big South decision to the Keydets.
LEXINGTON -- You could have almost called it a twin-killing except Reggie Williams had a lot to do with it, too.
Williams scored 22 of his 28 in the second half and twins Chavis and Travis Holmes combined for 51 as VMI wore out Radford 103-94 on Thursday night in Big South Conference play at overheated Cameron Hall.
Williams became the sixth Big South player to score 1,500 career points and snag 500 rebounds.
The Keydets (10-12, 3-3 Big South) won their third game in a row and fourth of their last five. VMI, alone in fourth place, is at .500 later in the season than in any of its three previous conference campaigns.
Radford (7-15, 2-5) lost its third in a row and for the ninth time in 11 games.
The Keydets took 22 more shots than the Highlanders while forcing 41 turnovers.
"You can't win with 41 turnovers," Radford coach Byron Samuels said.
For three practice sessions, Radford worked on breaking the Keydets' traps. Samuels said he'd liked what he'd seen in workouts.
"You can't really prepare for our pressure," Chavis Holmes said. "You hear that people practice six on five. But that's not really going to simulate how we're going to look in the game. When we get our momentum up, we feel like we can beat anybody like that."
VMI teams have now beaten Radford 12 times to go with the same number of defeats. Radford is 5-12 in Cameron Hall.
VMI didn't shoot well until late in the first half, and the Keydets were pretty much swapping buckets with the Highlanders, who had taken a while to get their bearings as well.
In the last minute, the teams were tied twice before the Keydets scored the last three points of the half to go up 43-40.
Radford went through stretches of scoring at will and finished the half making 54.8 percent of its shots and outrebounding the Keydets 25-14.
The problem the Highlanders had was holding on to the basketball, committing 23 turnovers in 20 minutes.
Travis Holmes was the one hot Keydet, burying four of seven 3-point attempts while scoring 16 points in the first half. Radford's Oliver had 19 in as many minutes to go with seven rebounds.
McIntyre went down with an apparent sprained ankle at the 4:06 mark. He did not return.
McIntyre finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Oliver added 31 points and 11 rebounds while playing 38 minutes. Five players played at least 33 minutes for Radford.
"He sprained an ankle," Samuels said. "We'll have it looked at when we get back."
Before the injury, the 6-foot-3 McIntyre had impressed VMI coach Duggar Baucom.
"He's quite a player," Baucom said.
