Ward sparks Generals

State

LEXINGTON - Sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward totaled 203 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns to propel Washington and Lee to a 41-14 win over Guilford in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

Ward caught seven passes for 61 yards and a touchdown, rushed eight times for 34 yards and racked up 108 kick-return yards, including an 86-yard touchdown return in the third quarter. For Ward, it was his second kick return for a touchdown in the past two weeks, tying the W&L record for kickoff-return touchdowns for a season (2) and career (2).

Greg Tweardy was 17-of-26 for 192 yards and two touchdowns for the Generals (4-3, 3-1). He also rushed for 9 yards and a touchdown.

Guilford (0-7, 0-3) was led by Chris Gammon, who completed a career-high 17 of 33 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

JMU 26, Richmond 20

RICHMOND - Maurice Fenner burst through the middle for a 46-yard touchdown with 2:20 remaining, and James Madison held on to defeat Richmond.

The Dukes (6-1, 5-0 Atlantic 10) began their final touchdown drive with 6:18 remaining. Fenner carried five times for 62 yards on the drive. On third-and-two from the Spiders' 46, Fenner broke through the initial wave of defenders and sprinted up the middle to give the Dukes a 26-17 lead.

James Madison had 455 yards of total offense. Fenner rushed for 139 yards on 21 carries, and sophomore quarterback Justin Rascati was 15-of-21 for a career-high 223 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown pass to Ardon Bransford.

Richmond (2-5, 1-3) had 344 yards of total offense. Junior Stacy Tutt completed a career-high 26 of 41 passes for 310 yards, including two touchdowns to Arman Shields. One of the TD passes was a 41-yarder on a tipped ball on the final play of the first half.

Averett 38,

Greensboro 7

DANVILLE - After four close games, Averett tallied 529 yards of total offense and cruised to a USA South win over Greensboro (2-5, 1-3 USA South).

Averett (5-2, 2-2) freshman Chris Baskerville gave the second best rushing performance in school history with 166 yards on 19 carries with one touchdown. His 79-yard run, the longest in school history, set up Averett's final score in the fourth quarter. Munoz scored two touchdowns, while running for 60 yards on six carries.

Bridgewater 49, E&H 38

BRIDGEWATER - Bridgewater (5-2, 3-0 ODAC) scored on its first four possession of the first quarter to take a 28-0 lead and coasted to victory over Emory&Henry in ODAC game.

Brandon Wakefield completed 14 of 19 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns. The senior quarterback set career highs for yards, touchdown passes thrown and total offense with 408 yards. The 378 passing yards set a BC single-game record and the five TD passes tied the BC single-game record.

Eric Spence gained 119 yards on six carries - the first time this season a BC running back topped the 100-yard mark.

Todd Woods had a big day for the Wasps (2-5, 1-2) with 351 yards passing. He completed 41-of-62 passes with four TDs. Jerad Jackson caught all four of Woods' TD passes and finished with 15 receptions for 141 yards.

Delaware 31,

William & Mary 28

NEWARK, Del. - Sonny Riccio threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Joe Bleymaier with 4:41 left, and Delaware rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat William and Mary.

The Blue Hens (6-1, 5-0 Atlantic 10) trailed 21-7 after the first quarter before coming back behind Riccio, who was 24-for-40 for 302 yards and two touchdowns.

Lang Campbell threw four touchdown passes to Dominique Thompson for W&M (5-2, 3-1). Thompson caught scoring passes of 10, 62 and 87 yards to stake the Tribe to an early 14-point lead, but the margin wouldn't last.

Thompson also caught a 64-yarder in the fourth quarter and finished with six catches for a school-record 244 yards.

Hampden-Sydney 41,

Catholic 26

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY - Hampden-Sydney running back Johnny Junes tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns to lead the 18th-ranked Tigers to victory over Catholic in an ODAC game.

Junes scored on runs of 45, 16, 14 and 1 yard as the Tigers (6-1, 4-1 ODAC) rolled up 519 yards of offense on the Cardinals (0-7, 0-3).

Sophomore Brett Delk made his first collegiate start in place of injured All-America quarterback J.D. Ricca, completing 12 of 21 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown.

Hampden-Sydney's defense limited its fifth opponent to less than 100 yards on the ground as Catholic finished with 42 yards rushing on 22 carries.

Meanwhile, Hampden-Sydney racked up 259 yards rushing on a season-high 47 carries as Junes finished with 130 yards on 18 attempts, while C.W. Clemmons picked up 74 yards on 12 first-half attempts.

Coastal Carolina 33,

Liberty 6

CONWAY, S.C. - Patrick Hall ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns to lead Coastal Carolina past Liberty.

Hall's first touchdown came on a 13-yard rush, giving the Chanticleers (6-1, 2-0 Big South) a 12-0 lead with 7:35 left in the first quarter. In the fourth quarter, Hall had a 6-yard run to score, extending Coastal Carolina's lead to 26-0.

Sam Gado put the Flames (2-5, 1-1) on the board with a 97-yard kickoff return with 7:26 left in the game.

Liberty was held to 143 offensive yards and had only seven first downs, while Coastal Carolina gained 326 yards on the ground.

Christopher Newport 24,

Methodist 10

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Christopher Newport spoiled Methodist's homecoming festivities and further tightened the USA South race with a quick defense and some hard running by Roland Hilliard.

The defeat ends a five-game winning streak for Methodist (5-2, 3-1).

The Captains (5-2, 2-1) stymied the Methodist rushing attack, limiting the Monarchs to 106 yards. Hilliard, meanwhile, was a workhorse, gaining 184 yards on 40 carries.

Christopher Newport's points, however, came through the air on three touchdown passes from quarterback Hudson Bryant. He hit George Jones on an 18-yard strike with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter to give the Captains a 7-3 lead. That was followed by a 36-yard touchdown pass to Nick Davis with 4:35 remaining in the second quarter, increasing the Christopher Newport lead to 17-3.

In the third quarter, Bryant struck again, this time with an 8-yard scoring strike to Greg Bolton.

Shenandoah 31,

Chowan 24

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - Junior Greene scored on a 45-yard reception with 6:31 left, enabling Shenandoah (5-2) to sneak out with a nonleague win over Chowan (1-6).

Chowan had a chance to tie late in the fourth quarter when the Braves drove to the SU 10, but quarterback Taylor Furlough was sacked on fourth down and the Hornets ran out the final 1:48.

The two teams combined for 60 points last season and it was again an offensive show as they combined for nearly 850 yards in total offense. Shenandoah had 286 of its 456 total yards on the ground.

Hampton 52,

South Carolina St. 36

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Hampton scored twice in 14 seconds in the first quarter on its way to a rout of South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

The Pirates (7-1, 4-1 MEAC), tied for first in the conference with S.C. State (5-2, 2-1), took advantage of five Bulldog turnovers to put the game away.

Hampton junior quarterback Prince Shepherd was 8-of-17 for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Shepherd threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Marquay McDaniel to start the scoring. Seconds later, Dirul Diaab intercepted an S.C. State pass and went 23 yards for the score.
