VMI assistant AD resigns after underwear theft charge

Christian Hoffman
Sheriff’s Capt. Chris Blaylock said a Washington and Lee University student came home Thursday and watched as Christian Hoffman, 28, fled her rooms.
Hoffman has been charged with one felony count of breaking and entering and two misdemeanor counts of petit larceny. Virginia Military Institute spokesman Stewart MacInnis said Hoffman resigned Tuesday morning.
Blaylock said there were two victims in the Thursday incident because two W&L students lived in the house on Sandbridge Lane, which is not far from where Hoffman lives on Hunter Hill Lane.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. Thursday. A maintenance worker at the student housing complex on Sandbridge had written down the license plate number of Hoffman’s car after concluding it looked out of place, Blaylock said. When deputies went to VMI at 2 p.m. to talk to Hoffman, he said he had taken panties from the house, Blaylock said.
The two women confirmed that panties were missing, he added. Blaylock said deputies are investigating "other incidences" and Hoffman may face more charges.
Hoffman, who was in his sixth year at VMI, was released on bond. He could not be reached for comment. The lawyer listed in court records as his attorney, Lee Taylor of Lexington, declined to comment.
