Radford U. basketball player indicted

The point guard who helped lead Radford University into the NCAA men’s basketball tournament faces felony charges of breaking and entering and grand larceny.

A Radford grand jury that met Friday returned indictments against Amir Johnson on the two charges, Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Rehak said.

Johnson was indicted on a charge of breaking and entering into the dwelling of former teammates Martell McDuffy and Jamar Jenkins on May 5, Radford Circuit Court Clerk Ann Howard said. The grand larceny indictment against Johnson charges him with stealing property having a value of $200 or more. The indictment does not say what Johnson is charged with stealing.

Radford police Lt. Andy Wilburn said Wednesday that Johnson had not been served with any indictments and police would not comment or release any information. Rehak could not be reached for comment, and indictments are not made available to the public until they are served.

“We will not comment until legal proceedings have run their course,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg in a statement released Wednesday afternoon by the school.

Johnson just completed his junior season as the team’s starting point guard and helped lead the Highlanders to the Big South Conference championship.

Johnson, who is from Pittsburgh, averaged 9.6 points per game and led the Big South in assists with 5.2 per game.

McDuffy was a senior this past season and was kicked off team in early January. Greenberg said it was for violation of team rules. McDuffy said his dismissal stemmed from an argument during practice.

Jenkins was a senior and played in 12 games.
