Virginia received a football commitment Sunday from Javanti Sparrow, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound wide receiver and defensive back from Western Branch High School in Chesapeake.

Sparrow, whose official visit to UVa coincided with the Cavaliers’ 35-20 victory over East Carolina on Saturday, is the 20th player to commit to Virginia for 2009. He also had an offer from North Carolina, according to rivals.com.

"He’s pretty physical and is very fast," said Western Branch coach Scott Johnson, who said he would be inclined to play Sparrow on defense, "but I’m a defensive coach. I’m biased. I just think he’s a playmaker."
