Hokies land Atlanta cager

Manny Atkins, a 6-foot-7 wing player from Atlanta, has become the third men's basketball player to commit to Virginia Tech for the class of 2009.

Atkins, a starter on the Tucker High School team that won a state championship in 2007, said he picked the Hokies over Georgia Tech and Marquette. He received an offer to Virginia Tech on an unofficial visit this past weekend.

"I knew before I went up there that there was a good chance I would commit if I liked it," said Atkins, who indicated that he also had offers from Clemson, Auburn, Michigan and Utah.

Atkins, who said he averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds as a junior, is rated the No. 90 junior in the country by Prep Stars and joins a recruiting class that includes guards Ben Boggs from Roanoke and Erick Green from Winchester.
