Virginia Tech elevates Taylor to No. 2 quarterback
BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer elevated freshman quarterback Tyrod Taylor to the No. 2 position on the depth chart before Tuesday's practice.
"I think he's got several things going for him," Beamer said after practice. "He's been very accurate throwing the football, and he's made some plays with his feet. And I think he's been very poised. Those are three good qualities to start out with."
Taylor, Tech's top recruit this year from Hampton High School, replaces redshirt sophomore Ike Whitaker and will back up starter Sean Glennon.
"Yes, I was surprised, but it was the coach's decision so I had to go with it," said Taylor, who learned of the change on the first day he attended his first four college classes.
Beamer said the 6-foot-4 Whitaker will make the move to wide receiver and special teams.
"When we evaluated the whole situation I think for Ike to help this football team, which I think he can, at this particular time I think it would be at receiver and special teams," Beamer said of Whitaker. "He's going to be on the punt block and punt return team. I think he needs to do that full time. It was too much doing quarterback and wide receiver."
Whitaker said he has no problem with the change.
