Alcantara rescues Salem

The Avalanche blows a lead and wins in the 13th.

WILMINGTON, Del. - Ervin Alcantara singled home Saul Torres with two outs in the top of the 13th inning Thursday night to lift the Salem Avalanche to a 6-5 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Designated hitter Mario Garza was 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBI for Salem (21-33), which squandered a two-run lead in the ninth. Avalanche reliever Aaron Williams came on in the top of the ninth and gave up four singles as the Blue Rocks (24-29 ) scored a pair of runs with two outs to send the game into extra innings.

Jonathan Beltre and Rodrigo Escobar combined to pitch four shutout extra innings. Beltre (1-0) struck out six and allowed just two hits in three innings to pick up the victory. Escobar came on in the 13th and earned his second save, striking out a pair of Wilmington batters.

Reliever Felix Romero (1-3) took the loss for Wilmington.

Salem starter Mitch Talbot pitched seven strong innings, allowing two earned runs while scattering six hits.
