Red Sox take 2-0 lead in series
Jon Hee's two-run single in the 11th inning gives Salem the commanding lead over the Dash.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- After a perfect night at the plate on Wednesday, Jon Hee struggled Thursday -- until the Salem Red Sox needed him most.
Hee lined a two-run single into right field in the top of the 11th inning to give Salem a 6-4 win and a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Southern Division championship series at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
"We've still got our work to do," said Salem manager Chad Epperson.
Lynchburg beat Wilmington 1-0 to even the Northern Division series at one game apiece.
The Southern Division series now moves to Salem for Game 3 today at 7:05 p.m. at Salem Memorial Ballpark, with Red Sox right-hander Seth Garrison (8-11, 3.90 ERA) slated to face Winston-Salem righty Jacob Rasner (4-7, 4.72). Game 4, if needed, will be in Salem on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.
If the Dash manages to win both games in Salem, the series will move back to Winston-Salem for Game 5 on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Brad Correll hit his second two-run homer of the series to start the Red Sox off in the fourth inning and Che-Hsuan Lin and Chih-Hsien Chiang each hit a solo shot for Salem, which ranked last in the Carolina League in home runs in the regular season with 62.
The Red Sox also got a strong start from Kyle Weiland, who gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and one walk through seven innings. Weiland hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start since May 29.
Anthony Rizzo, Chiang and Zach Borowiak each had three hits for Salem.
Dale Mollenhauer went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Dash.
The Sox were up 3-1 until Brent Morel's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fifth tied the score.
Chiang's homer in the top of the eighth broke the tie, but only temporarily.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Seth Loman singled and was replaced on the bases by Kent Gerst. Justin Greene then doubled to the wall in left. Chiang fielded the ball and threw it in to shortstop Ryan Dent, who fired it to the plate. Catcher Tim Federowicz hung on to get Gerst out at the plate.
Derrick Loop came in to relieve Jason Blackey, then Tyler Kuhn hit a grounder toward first that Rizzo fielded and flipped to Loop covering but too late. Loop and Rizzo both stood at first for a moment before Loop realized that Greene was scampering toward home. That throw was late too, and Greene scored to tie the game at 4.
"It's an above average runner at the plate, and an above average runner on second who's going on the swing," Epperson said. "Loop may have been a little late getting over there [to cover first] but it would have been tough to make the play. And then it was just waiting for the umpire to make the call [at first] and then making the throw to home.
"It's just freak things like that happen, and it happened that they scored the tying run on it."
Neither team could crack the deadlock until Zach Borowiak doubled down the left-field line to lead off the 11th off reliever Tyson Corley, the fifth Dash pitcher of the night.
Borowiak was stuck there when Tim Federowicz grounded out and Ryan Dent struck out. Lin drew a walk and stole second.
Then Hee, who'd gone 0-for-5 and grounded into a double play, drove the ball into right field. With two outs, the runners were going on contact and were already heading for home when Salvador Sanchez misplayed the ball allowing Hee to run from first to third. That was as far as he would get, though. Anthony Rizzo struck out to end the inning.
Kyle Fernandes, who'd come in to get the last out of the 10th, pitched a perfect 11th to get the win.
Hee had gone 3-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt and a walk in Wednesday's win in the series opener after getting just three hits in his last eight games and seeing his batting average drop to .236 for the season.
"I just flushed my mind from the regular season," Hee said after Wednesday's game. "I just tried to see the ball and hit it. I just tried to be simple."
Despite his struggles, Epperson said Thursday: "I feel very, very confident when Hee's up to the plate."
