Salem rallies to victory
Trailing 2-0, the Avs string together five straight singles in the fifth to top Potomac.
WOODBRIDGE, Va. -- The Salem Avalanche rode a barrage of well-timed singles to claim a 3-2 Carolina League victory over the Potomac Nationals on Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium.
The Avalanche (26-39) trailed 2-0 entering the fifth inning, when Jhon Florentino led off with a single to left field.
Nick Moresi followed with a base hit to right, and Mark Ori drove in Florentino with another single to right.
Ori was thrown out on the play, threatening to quell the rally, but the Avs didn't let that happen.
Koby Clemens ripped an RBI single that scored Moresi and chased Potomac starter Luis Atilano. Jimmy Van Ostrand greeted reliever Kyle Gunderson with a sacrifice fly that gave the Avalanche its first lead.
Clemens and Moresi each finished with two hits for Salem.
Dee Brown had two hits to pace Potomac (34-31).
David Qualben, Bryan Halberg and Jason Dominguez combined for 3 23 shutout innings of relief, allowing just two hits and no walks to preserve the win for starter Chad Wagler (5-4).
