MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Tyler Flowers smashed a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 7-5 win over the Salem Avalanche on Wednesday.

The Avs (6-13) had taken a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning on Mark Ori's RBI groundout, and Jimmy Van Ostrand homered to extend the lead to two.

But Myrtle Beach (11-8) loaded the bases in the eighth, and Flowers hit the first pitch he saw out.

Meanwhile, the Avs activated reliever Chad Wagler from the DL and sent starter Casey Hudspeth up to Double-A.

Hudspeth, a right-hander, went 4-7 with a 3.96 ERA in 17 starts for Salem. He replaces former Avalanche starter Brad James in Corpus Christi. James injured his arm in his last start.
