Trinidad's Future is now

Polin Trinidad, who stifled Carolina League bats for Salem in the first two months of the season, has made the World team for the Futures all-star game.

The Futures game is a part of Major League Baseball's All-Star Game, pitting U.S. prospects against prospects from the rest of the world on July 13 at 12:30 p.m. It will be televised on ESPN2.

This year, the U.S. team was picked as part of the USA Olympic team trial.

Trinidad has gone 1-2 with a 2.93 ERA with the Corpus Christi Hooks in the Double-A Texas League in five starts since he was called up from Salem.

The left-hander from the Dominican Republic, who uses more craft than power, went 4-2 with a 2.32 ERA for the Avalanche, allowing 11 walks while striking out 34 in 62 innings.

Heating up

First baseman Mark Ori has climbed to second in the Carolina League's RBI rankings and has pushed his batting average to sixth best in the league at .301.

Ori has hit .341 with six doubles since the beginning of June, driving in 17 runs to bring his RBI total to 51.

Ori and shortstop Tim Torres lead the Avalanche with 21 doubles each.

But Ori's slugging percentage is a relatively low .431 for a .300-hitting first baseman because he has just four home runs.

Koby Clemens leads the Avalanche with five homers. Salem's 31 total home runs is seventh in the eight-team league, better than only Wilmington's 28.

Cooling off

Salem's team ERA was 3.83 in April and 4.41 in May.

Since June 1, Avalanche pitchers have given up 4.62 earned runs a game.

Salem's team batting average was .252 in April and .259 in May.

So far in June, the Avalanche has hit .244.

Quick hits

Salem's Sunday games will move to 6:07 p.m. (from 2:07) starting this weekend. ... Avalanche reliever Jason Dominguez's run of innings without allowing an earned run has stretched to 17. ... Salem's newest player, catcher Jimmy Goethals, had been an assistant coach at his alma mater Menlo College during the past two seasons. He was Menlo's all-time home run and RBI leader with 19 homers and 92 RBIs in three seasons at the Division III school in Atherton Calif.
