Salem's late rally ends up a bit short

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Salem Avalanche scored two runs in the ninth inning against a pair of Winston-Salem pitchers, but could not rally for a tie Saturday in a 4-3 loss to the Warthogs.

Salem's Greg Buchanan grounded into a double play to end Salem's threat against Winston-Salem.

In the first inning against Salem starter David Qualben, the Warthogs (14-17) got a leadoff triple from Paulo Orlando and an RBI single from John Shelby III to take a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Brandon Allen hit the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to stretch the lead to 3-0.

In the fourth, Salem (14-20) got its first run, when Mark Ori's single to center scored Tim Torres. The Warthogs, though, countered with a sacrifice fly off of Orlando's bat that scored Lee Cruz.

Koby Clemens and Orlando Rosales scored in the ninth, but Greg Buchanan hit into a double play to end the game.
