Ori's blast helps Salem dig free from early hole

The Avalanche trails 3-0 before first baseman Mark Ori hits his second grand slam of the season.

Mark Ori keeps a notebook with page after page of little charts of his at-bats.

There's a box for him to draw the location of each pitch he sees, and what each pitch is. Also he notes what his swing was like, and of course, the outcome. The notations help Ori keep track of what each pitcher he faces has done in the past and predict what they might do to him in the future.

On Monday, next to Ori's neat little blue-ink description of his second at bat, was another note, penned in thick black marker by some anonymous author: "A bomb!"

Ori blasted a grand slam to lift the Salem Avalanche to a 6-4 Carolina League victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Ori's slam, his second of the season, highlighted a five-run third inning for the Avalanche, which fell behind 3-0 in the first two innings and earned a vociferous wakeup call from manager Jim Pankovits.

"It looked to me like we had a lethargic start," Pankovits said. "We really weren't alert and aggressive, and they took advantage of it. They are a team that's aggressive on the bases; similar to the way we need to play."

The Blue Rocks (19-11) jumped on Salem starter Brian Bogusevic right away. The first three batters got hits and Wilmington scored two runs on four hits in the first inning and a run on two hits in the next. Bogusevic allowed only one more run -- on a homer by Kiel Thibault -- but gave up a career-high 11 hits and also walked three batters in six innings.

In contrast, Ori said, the Avalanche "seemed kind of flat" until Pankovits "kind of rowdied up things."

With one out in the Salem third, Jose Lopez drew a walk from Wilmington starter Dan Cortes, who'd retired seven straight. Cesar Quintero and Wladimir Sutil singled to load the bases.

Osvaldo Fernando went to a 2-2 count before Cortes hit him with a pitch to force in Salem's first run.

Cortes got Pat Osborn to fly out, then Ori came up.

Ori was hoping for a fastball away, and actually got it on the first pitch. But he fouled it off, just barely getting it far enough to bounce into the stands and away from the field of play.

"I was kind of lucky. It hit on the top of the railing," Ori said. "So it was kind of like a second chance."

Cortes came back with a curveball, something he'd gotten Ori to swing at in his first-inning strikeout. But that one was low, this one wasn't.

"He gave me a hanging curveball," Ori said. "If I didn't take advantage of that ..."

Ori did, pulling the ball over the right-field wall.

A bomb.

Notes

With reliever Rodrigo Escobar activated on Sunday, the Avalanche put reliever Enyelbert Soto on the disabled list. Pankovits said Soto will have an MRI on his right elbow, which has been bothering him. ...

Pankovits said first baseman Ole Sheldon might have to have surgery to repair his broken hand. ...

Reliever Sean Walker pitched batting practice on Monday and Pankovits said he expects reliever Evan Englebrook to throw some this week. Both have been out of action with ankle sprains. ...

Billy Hart's hitting streak ended at 14 games. Hart was 0-for-3 when he was pulled out of left field after the seventh inning to bolster the defense in a two-run game. Hart has played only four games in the outfield.
