Avs are on Cloud Nine after big inning

Orlando Rosales was a little bit winded and a little bit wounded when his name was called for a second time in the bottom of the third inning Tuesday night.

Rosales batted twice, scored twice, stole a base and drove in two runs as the Salem Avalanche batted around and scored nine runs in the inning to erase a three-run deficit on its way to an eventful 12-9 win over the Frederick Keys at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Rosales added an RBI single in the seventh that proved to be the game-winning hit.

"I counted four momentum changes," Rosales said. "It was fun because we were back in the game, but then it was not fun because you were afraid something would happen."

The Keys started off by tagging Salem starter Raymar Diaz for three runs in the second inning. They loaded the bases again with one out in the third, but when Diaz was lifted in favor of reliever Matt Sweeney, the Keys couldn't capitalize.

Frederick answered Salem's nine-run third -- the Avalanche's most productive inning of the season -- with a five-run fifth against Sweeney to pull within 9-8.

Rosales' RBI single in the seventh gave the Avalanche the game-winning run, and Salem added two more in the eighth to hang on despite giving up a run and letting the Keys load the bases again in the ninth.

Mitch Einertson went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for Salem (10-12). Mark Ori drove in three runs and Pat Osborn went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs.

Brent Krause and former Radford University star Mark Fleisher belted two-run homers for Frederick (8-16). Ryan Finan went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Rosales ignited Salem's third-inning rally with a leadoff single and then stole second base, jamming his knee a little when he hit the bag at second.

By the time he came around again, Rosales said, "I was beat. Once I was in the dugout, I was already in the hole. But I like to get at bats. ...

"I took a deep breath and tried to relax in the batter's box. I was looking for a ball up, luckily I got one on the outer half of the plate about belt high."

Rosales drove it to the wall in right-center to plate two more runs, and came home moments later on a single by Lopez.

After the Keys pulled within one, Osborn doubled to lead off the seventh, went to third on a bunt by Hart and scored on Rosales' two-out single up the middle.

Ori had a sacrifice fly and Osborn an RBI double to put Salem up 12-8.

Salem closer Sammy Gervacio struck out three straight batters in the eighth, but struggled in the ninth before earning his 15th save.

"The game's not over," Avalanche manager Jim Pankovits said of the Keys' late rally. "We have to continue to play and make good pitches."

Notes

Pankovits said Rory Shortell will fill in for Brad James in the Salem rotation.

"How long that will be, I don't know," Pankovits said.

James (9-2, 1.98 ERA) was called up to Double-A Corpus Christi after Saturday's game. Shortell (5-3, 2.94) pitched two perfect innings of relief on Tuesday.

With James gone, the Avalanche added left-handed reliever Jeff Wigdahl to the roster Tuesday.

Wigdahl spent the second half of 2005 and all of 2006 with the Avalanche, going 6-2 with a 2.00 ERA for Salem last year.

He started this season with Corpus Christi, going 2-2 with a 5.54 ERA in 22 appearances.
