Potomac wins another

WOODBRIDGE -- Edgardo Baez's two-run home run highlighted a four-run fourth inning and Potomac made it two straight wins over Salem, this one by a 5-3 score.

The Avalanche, which was shut out on Tuesday, scored single runs in both the first and second innings on RBI singles by Mark Ori and Thomas Manzella, but starting pitcher Christopher Salamida ran into trouble in the fourth, surrendering three hits -- two of those for extra bases -- and a walk.

Salamida was charged with all five of Potomac runs, allowing six hits along the way in five innings of work.

Ole Sheldon did give Salem hope in the top of the ninth inning with a two-out solo home run.

However, Potomac's pitching staff combined to strike out 12 Avalanche batters -- six of those against the top-three players in Salem's lineup -- Joshua Flores (3), Manzella (1) and Justin Towels (2).

Nationals closer Dan Kolb, who entered in the eighth inning got five of his six outs by strikeout.

Manzella and Oli Sheldon both had two hits for Salem, which finished with nine hits, but left 11 runners on base.

Salem closes out its four-series in Potomac at 7:35 p.m. tonight.
