WILMINGTON, Del. - Mookie Betts homered and drove in five runs as the Salem Red Sox downed the Wilmington Blue Rocks 6-1 at Frawley Stadium on Sunday.
The Sox took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Stefan Welch walked, then Blake Swihart doubled to set the stage for Betts, as he singled them both home.
After Deven Marrero launched a solo home run in the top of sixth, Betts struck again, hitting a two-run home run to left to make the score 5-0.
Betts topped off his day in the top of the eighth with an RBI single that drove in Welch.
The Blue Rocks' lone run came in the bottom of the sixth when Justin Trapp scored from third on a 6-4-3 double play.
Sox starter William Cuevas evened his record at 7-7 by pitching seven solid innings, giving up one run and four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Game two of the series will feature a pair of right-handers as Kyle Stroup (4-7, 4.84) faces J.C. Sulbaran (0-2, 8.56). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
