ZEBULON, N.C. - Paddy Matera doubled in two, and Joe Wendle's second of three doubles in the game drove in another to key the pivotal fifth inning as the Mudcats downed the Sox 7-2 in front of 2,909 at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats jumped out to an early lead in the first as Tyler Naquin tripled and later scored on a groundout by Tony Wolters.
Henry Ramos tied the game by belting his eighth home run of the season, a solo home run over the right field wall, tying the game at one.
Carolina re-took the lead as Paddy Matera drove home Bryson Myles with a sacrifice fly. Deven Marrero singled home Matthew Gedman to tie the game at two after four and a half innings.
There, the wheels fell off for Sox starter Mickey Pena (3-4) as the first three hitters reached base, two of which scored before Matty Ott was brought in in relief. Ott surrendered three more hits and by the time the third out was recorded, five Mudcats had crossed the plate.
Salem didn't threaten the rest of the way.
Cody Anderson (7-3) got the win on the mound pitching five innings and giving up two runs and five hits.
ON DECK: The Sox finish the four-game set and the road trip with right-hander Kyle Stroup (4-7, 5.06) climbing the hill to face Mudcats' southpaw Shawn Morimando (4-9, 3.11). The Sunday tilt starts at 2 p.m.
