BURLINGTON, N.C. — Pulaski Mariners shortstop Zach Shank mishandled a ball hit by Andrew Ayers, allowing Mauricio Ramos to score the game-winning run as Burlington won the Appalachian League opener 2-1 in 13 innings Thursday night.
Mariners starter Edwin Ramos, a 2012 third-round draft pick, was untouchable early as he was perfect through the first five innings before surrendering a leadoff double to Alex Newman in the sixth.
Pulaski got on the board first in the top of the fifth when Toby DeMello doubled home Joseph DeCarlo. Burlington evened the score in the bottom of the seventh when Ramos drove home Ramon Torres with a sacrifice fly to center.
Scott Ronnenbergh took the loss for Pulaski.
The Mariners will conclude the three-game set with Burlington with games tonight and Saturday night before having their home opener Sunday at Calfee Park at 7 p.m. against the Bluefield Blue Jays.
