SAN JOSE, Calif. — Lynchburg’s Robby Hefflinger certainly enjoyed his day in the sun Tuesday in California.
After winning the Home Run Derby, the Hillcats slugger went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and a run scored to earn MVP honors as the Carolina League pounded the California League 12-2 in the California-Carolina League All-Star Game at Municipal Stadium.
The Salem Red Sox had a pair of starters in the game, with Garin Cecchini playing third and Blake Swihart catching.
Swihart went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Cecchini was 0-for-2 with a walk. Swihart also threw out a California baserunner.
Salem pitcher Henry Owens was on the Carolina League roster, but didn’t see action in the game.
The Carolina all-stars batted around in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring five runs in each to build a 12-1 lead after five.
“We wanted to let these guys know that this was their game,” said Lynchburg Hillcats skipper Luis Salazar, who managed the Carolina League. “We told them to enjoy it, they’ll remember it for the rest of their careers. That’s what they did. They came to play.”
Myrtle Beach right-hander Luke Jackson started for the Carolina League and picked up the win. He allowed no hits and struck out one in one inning of work.
California starter Drew Granier gave up a run in the first to take the loss.
The Salem Red Sox begin the second half on Friday as Owens will take the mound for the Sox, who travel to Wilmington for a 7:05 p.m. start.
