FREDERICK, MD. - Michael McCarthy (3-2) pitched five solid innings, allowing only a leadoff home run to Jerome Pena, and Keury De La Cruz laced a two run-double in a pivotal three-run third inning as the Sox edged the Frederick Keys 3-2 at Harry Grove Stadium.
David Renfroe drove in Garin Cecchini with the eventual game-winning run with a groundout after De La Cruz's double.
The Keys closed the margin to one as Travis Adair plated Delvi Cid in the bottom of the seventh on a bunt groundout.
However, the Keys couldn't complete the comeback as Nefi Ogando pitched the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.
Keys starter Zach Petersime (1-5) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out six while walking two.
Sean Coyle had three hits, including a double, and Cecchini went 1 for 2 to raise his Carolina League-leading average to .376.
Virginia Tech alum Matt Price allowed one run and struck out four in two innings of relief work.
ON DECK: Game two of this three-game series will pit Salem RHP Mike Augliera (4-0) against Frederick RHP Zach Davies (3-3). First pitch is at 6 p.m.
