This week's games
Mark Berman looks at Saturday's games involving ACC and local teams.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
MIAMI AT OHIO STATE
3:40 p.m. | ESPN
The No. 2 Buckeyes and No. 12 Hurricanes meet for the first time since Ohio State won the BCS national title with a double-OT win in the Fiesta Bowl in January 2003.
Ohio State's Terrelle Pryor threw three TD passes against Marshall last week.
"The fun of him is that he loves working on the game, he loves trying to get better," coach Jim Tressel said.
Miami coach Randy Shannon isn't worrying only about Pryor, though.
"Over the years watching Coach Tressel, ... he's going to run the football and pound the football with his tailbacks," Shannon said. "It's not going to be wind up and throw the ball 40 times with Terrelle Pryor."
FLORIDA STATE AT OKLAHOMA
3:30 p.m. | WSET
The No. 10 Sooners and No. 17 FSU meet for the first time since Oklahoma won the BCS national title in the Orange Bowl in January 2000.
The Sooners weren't all that impressive in their 31-24 win over Utah State last week. Coach Bob Stoops said his secondary must improve.
"I do feel strong that we'll be able to correct some of the mistakes," he said. "Find the ball and make the play on it."
DUKE AT WAKE FOREST
Noon | My19 (WDBJ Digital)
The Demon Deacons (1-0) try to beat Duke (1-0) for the 11th straight time.
"We've got to contain their offense a little better than we have the last couple years," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. "We've got to prevent big plays, which we didn't do very well against Elon" last week.
Wake QB Ted Stachitas and Duke QB Sean Renfree each made his starting debut last week.
Stachitas "was somewhat indecisive at times," Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe said. "We've got to ... get him comfortable enough that he makes better decisions and makes them a little bit quicker."
N.C. STATE AT CENTRAL FLORIDA
7:30 p.m. | CBS College Sports
Each team opened with a win over a I-AA foe.
GEORGIA TECH AT KANSAS
Noon | CSN
First-year coach Turner Gill's Jayhawks are coming off a stunning 6-3 loss to Division I-AA North Dakota State.
"We have to implement our offense. It takes time," Gill said. "Offense is usually the phase where it takes a little longer to get going, particularly when you're trying to find your starting quarterback."
KENT STATE AT BOSTON COLLEGE
3:30 p.m. | ESPNU
BC QB Dave Shinskie might lose his job if he doesn't improve soon.
"We need to see management of the game to our satisfaction," coach Frank Spaziani said. "There's a lot of things that aren't visible to the fan."
PRESBYTERIAN AT CLEMSON
3:30 p.m.
The Blue Hose (0-1) visits an ACC team for the second straight week.
MORGAN STATE AT MARYLAND
6 p.m.
The Terps play the I-AA Bears for the first time.
VMI AT WILLIAM AND MARY
7 p.m.
The Tribe (0-1), ranked 11th in The Sports Network I-AA poll, has beaten VMI 23 straight times.
For the first time since 1943, the teams did not meet last season. This game begins a two-year contract, but VMI athletic director Donny White isn't sure if he wants the series to continue in 2012.
"We have not been as competitive with William and Mary and Richmond like we used to be years ago, so it's certainly something that we're talking about as to whether we need to continue to play them every year," he said.
VMI coach Sparky Woods is prepared to play several QBs again, although Cam Jones remains the starter.
"We would like for one of them to kind of separate themselves out," Woods said. "With the lack of experience and stuff, it's hard for one guy to step forward a little bit. I wish that it wasn't this way. I'm real uncomfortable having to play musical quarterbacks."
W&L AT SEWANEE
2 p.m.
The Generals (0-1) seek to beat Sewanee for the sixth straight time.
W&L allowed 317 yards through the air in last week's loss at Franklin & Marshall.
"Our pass coverage is just something that needs to get a whole lot better," coach Frank Miriello said.
The Tigers won their opener, snapping a 17-game skid.
SOUTHERN VIRGINIA AT LINDSEY WILSON
2:30 p.m.
SVU (1-1) visits a team from Columbia, Ky., that is playing football this season for the first time in 75 years. The game against the Blue Raiders (0-1) will be broadcast on victorysportsnetwork.com as the "NAIA Football Game of the Week."
