IN THE SPOTLIGHT
CLEMSON AT GEORGIA TECH
7:30 p.m. today | ESPN
Storyline: Clemson (1-0) and the No. 15 Yellow Jackets (1-0) begin ACC play after winning easy games last Saturday.
"This is the first time in my coaching career I've ever tried to play on a five-day turnaround," Georgia Tech's Paul Johnson said.
After facing Middle Tennessee's spread offense last weekend, Clemson will have to deal with the ground game of Georgia Tech.
Clemson RB C.J. Spiller returned the game's opening kickoff for a touchdown last weekend, but he missed some time in the first half after hyperventilating and didn't play in the second half because an MTSU player stepped on his foot in the second quarter. He will play tonight, though.
"He only played about 11 snaps, so he ought to have nice, fresh legs," coach Dabo Swinney said.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Parker completed nine of 20 passes for Clemson last weekend. Swinney said four passes were dropped.
"He's a very good athlete -- made some big first downs for them [by] scrambling," Johnson said. "He brings a different element to the party than the [Cullen] Harper kid who played last year in that he's so much more mobile."
JMU AT MARYLAND
6 p.m. Saturday
Storyline: William and Mary knocked off Virginia. Richmond upended Duke. Villanova bumped off Temple. Will JMU (0-0) be the next Colonial Athletic Association team to beat a Division I-A foe?
"We probably couldn't have picked a worse time to go in there," JMU coach Mickey Matthews said. "I'm sure Coach [Ralph] Friedgen has reminded their team about 100 times this week about the Richmond and William and Mary games."
The Dukes made the I-AA semifinals last year but must replace star QB Rodney Landers. The QB battle between Drew Dudzik and Justin Thorpe will continue Saturday.
JMU returns five starters on defense.
"This is the most athletic we've ever been on defense, but we have some young guys," Matthews said.
Maryland is coming off a 52-13 thrashing at California. Friedgen wasn't happy with his team's seven penalties and two fumbles, nor the six sacks the Terps allowed.
UNC AT UCONN
Noon Saturday | ESPNU
Storyline: The No. 19 Tar Heels (1-0) seek to beat the Huskies (1-0) for the second straight year.
UConn lost RB Donald Brown to the NFL Draft, but Andre Dixon and Jordan Todman each ran for at least 100 yards against Ohio last week.
"They've got two young men that are very, very talented and probably possess more home-run-hitting ability than maybe Donald Brown did," UNC coach Butch Davis said.
STANFORD AT WAKE FOREST
Noon Sat. | My19 (WDBJ Digital )
Storyline: After losing to Baylor, Wake meets the Cardinal (1-0) for the first time.
"You think of Stanford as being kind of wide-open, ... but this is more of a Big Ten-type football team," Wake coach Jim Grobe said. "They're a really big, physical ... team. ... We played a good team last week in Baylor, but I think this Stanford team might be better."
DUKE AT ARMY
Noon Sat. | CBS College Sports
Storyline: The Blue Devils hope to do better against Army (1-0) than they did against Richmond.
"We have to win the kicking game," coach David Cutcliffe said. "That was a big part of our loss, getting a punt blocked and missing two chip-shot field goals.
"If you stop yourself on offense and give up big plays on defense, it's going to hurt you. ... You can't be a throwing team and be 3-of-14 in your third-down conversions."
JACKSONVILLE ST. AT FSU
6 p.m. Saturday
Storyline: After losing to Miami in a great game Monday, the Seminoles host a I-AA foe.
"We nearly won the game," FSU coach Bobby Bowden said. "Now ... it's just, 'How good is Miami?' I'm hoping they're real good, because if they are, we are too."
Bowden, whose team visits BYU next week, plans to remind his squad about the UVa and Duke losses last weekend. His motto this week is: "Avoid the upset."
Former LSU QB Ryan Perrilloux, who was suspended for the Gamecocks' loss to Georgia Tech last week, will play against FSU.
MURRAY STATE AT N.C. STATE
6 p.m. Saturday
Storyline: After failing to score a touchdown against South Carolina, the Wolfpack hopes to improve against the I-AA Racers.
"We have to do a better job with the offensive line controlling the line of scrimmage," coach Tom O'Brien said.
KENT STATE AT BC
2 p.m. Saturday
Storyline: Boston College's QB duel between Justin Tuggle and David Shinskie continues Saturday.
"No one separated themselves from each other" in last weekend's rout of Northeastern, coach Frank Spaziani said. "We obviously have to get ourselves solidified there."
Kent State beat I-AA Coastal Carolina last weekend, but its Mid-American Conference rivals went 0-7 against opponents from BCS leagues last week.
SEWANEE AT W&L
1 p.m. Saturday
Storyline: The Generals, who have beaten Sewanee (0-0) four straight times, look to bounce back from a 29-27 loss at Franklin & Marshall.
W&L turned the ball over five times last weekend.
"We've got to cut down on the turnovers, and defensively we've got to tackle a little better," W&L coach Frank Miriello said.
