Maryland reaches semis past Wake
ATLANTA -- Before leaving for the ACC tournament, Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams had T-shirts printed imploring the team to "Win Two." That was the requirement if his team were to garner serious NCAA tournament consideration, the coach believed.
"Pull out the 'Win Three' T-shirts now," Williams said Friday.
The seventh-seeded Terrapins will get that chance after upsetting cold-shooting Wake Forest 75-64 in Friday's quarterfinals, strengthening their claim that they should be an at-large selection.
Maryland, Miami and Virginia Tech were the three conference teams who arrived here thinking a run to the semifinals would get them into the NCAAs. The Terrapins (20-12) -- who will face Duke today -- were the only team to accomplish it, getting 22 points from Greivis Vasquez and big efforts on the boards throughout their lineup.
"I think we have a great league," Williams said, when asked about his NCAA chances, "and hopefully we'll be well-represented."
Maryland packed in its zone and dared the bigger, stronger Demon Deacons (24-6) to shoot from the outside. Wake Forest jacked up 25 shots from beyond the arc and made just three. The Deacs shot a season-low 29.7 percent overall.
"You're not going to beat many teams -- I don't care who you're playing, when you're playing or how you're playing -- when you shoot 29 percent," Wake coach Dino Gaudio said. "That was our biggest downfall."
James Johnson scored 20 points in only 25 minutes for Wake Forest, but he was sorely missed for much of the first half after picking up his third foul. The Terrapins earned a 44-40 rebounding advantage just two weeks after getting outrebounded by 18 at home by the Deacons.
Landon Milbourne grabbed 11 boards for the Terrapins. Sean Mosley (12 points), Eric Hayes (11) and Dave Neal (10) joined Vasquez in double-figure scoring.
"We are a proud team," Vasquez said. "We've come a long way. We have worked really hard to get into this position."
