WILLIAMSBURG - While Roanoke Post 3 played well enough to be credited with a win on Thursday morning, the club's American Legion baseball season came to an end due to poor weather.
Post 3 (17-3) defeated Mechanicsville 3-0 in a Legion state tournament losers' bracket game called due to rain after five innings. Mechanicsville had scored six times in the sixth to take the lead, but since Post 3 never got a chance to hit in the bottom of the sixth, the score reverted to the fifth inning.
The bad news, however, was the 90-minute storm was severe enough to leave the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex baseball field unplayable.
As a result, the double-elimination format was altered, leaving only unbeaten Danville and Albemarle left to play for the state final today.
Albemarle, which beat Post 3 on Wednesday, has knocked the Roanoke club into the losers' bracket in each of the last three state tournaments.
Danville, which lost twice during the regular season to Post 3, defeated Winchester 13-6 late Wednesday night to earn its spot in the final.
Winchester and Vienna were supposed to play the other losers' bracket game, but it was canceled before it started.
Winning pitcher Ben Schmidt improved to 2-0. Hayden Smith had a two-run double in Roanoke's three-run fourth inning.
Andrew Peterson and Smith each had two hits.
