WILLIAMSBURG -- Three first-inning errors by Roanoke Post 3 helped lead to four unearned runs for Albemarle Post 74, which went on to a 16-2 win in the second round of the Virginia American Legion state tournament at Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex on Wednesday.
The game was called after seven innings because of the mercy rule.
The defeat put Post 3 (16-3) in the losers bracket, and the team must win twice today to advance to Saturday's losers bracket final. Roanoke plays Mechanicsville Post 175 at 10 a.m. today, and the loser will be eliminated.
Jake Schuyler, who came into the game with a 0.81 ERA, surrendered 11 runs - five of those unearned - over 3 2⁄3 innings.
