Friday, July 25, 2008RECREATIONRECREATION Golf tournament winners The Andrew Haley Memorial/SML Lions Junior Open Golf Tournament was held Monday and Tuesday at Mariners Landing and The Waterfront country clubs. Participants it the tournament competed over two 18-hole rounds and also had the opportunity to compete in putting and long-drive contests. Jack Adkins of Martinsville outputted his competitors in the putting contest. Zach Scharf of Lynchburg had the longest drive (317 yards) of all competitors in the tournament. Blake Carter of Bassett won the Junior Boys putting contest; contestants had to make a qualifying putt of about 10 feet and then compete to be closest to the hole on a much longer putt. Stanley Shelton of Chatham won the Junior Boys long-drive contest with a drive of 308 yards. Zachary Bauchou of Forest uncorked a drive of 275 yards to win the Boys Rookie division long-drive contest, and Andrew Butts of Salem was the top putter in the division. The Haley family and Mariners Landing honored the memory of Andrew Haley by awarding two scholarships to Senior Division competitors at the tournament. The winners were selected from a list of applicants based on character, academics and financial need. Brian Cox of Radford was awarded a $750 scholarship and Jonathan Dove of Collinsville was awarded a $500 scholarship. David Hudgins of Hardy birdied the last hole to win the Senior Boys division; 49 golfers competed. Finishing a close second was Scott Obenshain of Salem.
