Each year when the Fourth of July arrives, it's often accompanied by visitors who are looking for something new and fun to do. The lake itself provides numerous recreational activities, and there are major events scheduled for Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5. But if you're looking for more, here's a list of 50 things you can do to help keep you, your friends and family entertained this weekend.

1: Visit the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford. (586-3329)

14: Hike the trails at Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Bedford County.

16. Star gaze: Try it from a boat drifting in an off-channel cove; it's great to lie down and look up. Remember to leave on your running lights.

17: Summon the Virginia BBQ Boat for dockside service. Look for the boat between Hales Ford Bridge and the Cliffs, or call 263-1673 or 489-1788 to place an order for delivery.

18: Keep binoculars handy for boat spotting. Reward the first person to spot a deck boat, pontoon, tri-toon, ski boat, wakeboard boat, cruiser, runabout, center console, four brands of PWCs, etc.

19: Order out from Hot Shots, the only food-delivery-by-land service at the lake. (719-1547)
