Fourth of July festivities

If you're heading out by boat to the 18th annual fireworks display Saturday, July 5 at Parkway Marina, remember it has been declared a no-wake event by the Smith Mountain Lake Water Safety Council (WSC).

The no-wake zone will encompass the primary viewing areas from the lake for the over-water fireworks, scheduled to begin around 9:30 p.m.

The fireworks will cap the Independence Day Celebration, a benefit for Saunders Volunteer Fire Company in Huddleston. Activities that will include, food, music, an antique and custom car show, military vehicle and hardware display, carousel rides, mini train, food, beverages, arts, crafts and music by The Worx, begin at 2 p.m.

The fireworks mirrored on the lake's surface typically attracts thousands of boats to the viewing area near the confluence of the Roanoke, Blackwater and Craddock Creek channels.

The no-wake zone, initiated in 2006 to reduce the likelihood of a collision or swamping amidst the congestion, asks boaters to travel at idle speed in and around the viewing area, about a mile up each channel from the viewing area.

"We've had fantastic response from SML's resident and visiting boaters," says WSC Chairman Peter Lewis. "People readily understand the hazards created by boats operating at planing speeds in the congested areas, especially during what had become a stampede for home once the fireworks ended. We've had virtually 100 percent compliance with the no-wake recommendation, making it much safer to be out on the water that night."

The no-wake zone boundaries will be marked on the water by boats from the SML Power Boating Association (SMLPBA) flying lighted orange "Home Tour" balloons.

Al Busch of SML Marine Volunteer Fire/Rescue, which averages 10-12 distress calls on the night of the fireworks, advises boaters to check running lights for proper operation, make sure there is enough gasoline for the round trip and have a full charge on your battery. Dead batteries are the most frequent problem when the fireworks end, according to Busch.

Those who want to make a tax-deductible contribution to the Saunders Volunteer Fire Company can mail it to: Treasurer, Saunders Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 14, Huddleston, VA 24104.
