Handbell choir performs in Moneta

The Walsh Memorial Bell Choir from Morris Plains, N.J., recently performed at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta as part of their summer tour. The 13 members of the choir captivated the audience with their renditions of a dozen numbers. The members, in grades 7 through 12, have been ringing bells since the fourth grade.

Moneta Lions install new leaders, provide services

The Moneta Lions Club celebrated the 19th anniversary of its charter with Lions International during a dinner meeting on June 19 at the Olde Liberty Station Restaurant in Bedford. Past International Director Richard Chaffin administered the oath of office to officers and directors (above center) for the fiscal year 2008-2009: (from left) Bart Matthies, Lion Tamer; Lynne Philbin, Tail Twister; Pat Maddox, one-year director; Rob Senoski, president; Joan Brackin, first vice president; Tim Haer, immediate past president; Pat Bailey, secretary; Gloria Guice, two-year director; Del Bailey, treasurer; and Jerry Over, second vice president. Chaffin also presented the prestigious Melvin Jones Award, on behalf of Lions Clubs International, to (above left, from left) Bruce Cooke, Gloria Guice and Chuck Dideon. Members of the club recently completed a community service project involving a yard makeover in conjunction with the Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging (CVAAA) center in Moneta. Participating were (above right, from left) Rob Senoski, Tim Haer, Jim Hun and Gloria Guice. Guice (bottom right, at left) also presented a donation on behalf of the club to Joyce Branson, coordinator of the Moneta CVAAA to help offset operating expenditures due to rising costs.

Lake residents meet with Rep. Virgil Goode

On June 8, Smith Mountain Lake residents hosted a series of complimentary ice cream socials on their boat docks to offer neighbors a chance to meet Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Rocky Mount. The first was on the dock of Ron and Marilyn Bach, residents of Mariners Landing, the second was on the dock of Ralph and Barbara Brush of Year Round Shores and the last was held at Waverly.

White Can Day observed

Members of the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club held a White Cane Day event at two Westlake Towne Center locations on June 28. The white cane with a red band has been used for 70 years to identify those who are blind or visually impaired. The SML Lions sold brooms assembled by the visually impaired and SML license-plate holders; cash donations also were received. Participating were (from left) Cheryl Ward, Jim Chambers and Becky Sparks.
