TLAC committee seeks clarification on navigational marker plans

Appalachian Power's recent relicensing application took center stage at Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission's monthly meeting on Wednesday.

Stan Smith, chairman of TLAC's Navigation Committee will be sending a letter to Appalachian on behalf of the committee, requesting a meeting to clarify what role TLAC would be expected to play in the lake's future navigational marker system.

It would also outline which parts of Appalachian's navigation management plan the Navigation Committee finds fault with. The board voted to send an additional letter from TLAC endorsing points in the committee's letter.

TLAC's Environmental Committee also will send letters requesting meetings with Appalachian over the license application's aquatic vegetation and debris management plans.

In other TLAC news:

  • TLAC voted to send approval recommendations to Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for the installation of five no-wake buoys and three swim buoys at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park.
  • The board voted to send disapproval recommendations to VDGIF for the installation of three no-wake buoys and two swim buoys at Mariners Landing's beach. Smith said the buoys must be used to establish protection for public areas. The beach at Mariners Landing was deemed a private area.
  • Pam Dinkle, lake management and project coordinator, will update environmental articles printed several years ago in area newspapers to remind homeowners about invasive and native weeds and algae. The letters also will be sent out by Leesville Lake Association. The board will request insertion into Chamber of Commerce mailings.
