Truck ends up upside-down

An overturned dump truck closed Virginia 122 just north of Hardy Road in Hardy for approximately three hours on May 1, according to Virginia State Police Trooper Rocky Howington.

Monty Newton, 42, of Boones Mill, was transporting 12 tons of asphalt in a 2007 Mack dump truck for CJ Asphalt, Inc. of Boones Mill, said Howington. At approximately 2 p.m., Newton, who was traveling northbound at approximately 50 miles per hour, moved to the right shoulder to avoid a vehicle going southbound that was driving on the yellow line. Newton struck a mailbox and overcorrected, veering to the left shoulder where his vehicle struck several trees and overturned.

Howington said about 90 gallons of diesel fuel were cleaned off the road by WEL, Inc. of Roanoke. Both lanes were open by 5 p.m.

Newton sustained minimal injuries. He was charged with failure to maintain control of the vehicle. The crash resulted in approximately $90,000 in property damage, said Howington.
