Wanted: 40 years of lake memories

Do you know much about the history of the lake?

Were you a farmer before the lake was filled or do you know a farmer who was in the area when the dam project began?

Do you know what life was like before there was a lake?

If so, we want to hear your story.

March 7 marks the 40th anniversary of the day Smith Mountain Lake first filled to capacity.

Work began on Appalachian Electric Power Company's Smith Mountain Dam in 1958 and was completed two years later.

Nearly six years after the construction of the $50 million dam project was complete, Smith Mountain Lake reached full capacity.
