Mother-daughter muralists get the pictures go-ahead

Artists Lisa and Julia Floyd are painting the lake in several mediums from photographs by a local photographer.

If you have eaten at Joe's Pizza since it opened at its new location in October, you have already seen the artwork of Lisa and Julia Floyd.

The mother-daughter team are the creative minds behind the murals and window niches that adorn the walls of the Italian eatery, creating an unmistakable Tuscan ambience.

The family opened Smith Mountain Lake Arts, a studio and gallery, in the lower level of Lake Plaza last month.

Two weeks ago, Lisa Floyd embarked on a new journey by contacting lake photographer James Roney.

"I called him up and let him know I wanted to paint his photos," she said. "I think his photos are stunning."

Although a number of artists contact Roney annually, the photographer said he was waiting for the right artist to come along.

"Lisa is truly heaven-sent," Roney said. "She's a lovely, lovely person."

The Floyds are painting Roney's photographs, but there is no partnership between the two parties.

Roney operates the Web site virginiasbestkeptsecret.com and said the top four searches about the lake are real estate, pictures, food and lodging, in that order. No. 2 is the one that interests him most.

There is "a need for any kind of Smith Mountain Lake art to hang on the wall," he said.

Roney has more than 100 signature images taken at the lake since he moved here in 1997.

"People can know the print they're seeing is an authentic Smith Mountain Lake image -- not just any lake -- but our lake," Lisa Floyd said.

She wants to paint Roney's photographs in several mediums: oils, pastels, watercolors and chalks, creating something for varying tastes.

"Art is not one-size-fits-all," she said.

Roney agreed, saying, "Not everyone wants a photograph to hang on the wall."

The images Lisa Floyd and Julia, 16, are reproducing will allow the Floyds to "be able to offer things tangibly priced," he said.

Joe Altadonna, owner of Joe's Pizza, said his customers love the work the Floyds did.

"I'm pretty sure they're going to make a good place there," he said.

Not that Lisa Floyd doesn't have any jitters about the new project.

"What if I have to mass-produce oil paintings to keep up?" she asked, giggling.

She should be able to handle it; she's been painting murals in McDonald's and Wendy's fast-food restaurants all over the United States for more than 25 years.

Lisa Floyd and husband Dale moved to Moneta two years ago from Winston-Salem, N.C., to focus more on their family.

Julia and Jesse, 14, are both home schooled.

With the opening of the studio and gallery, Lisa and Julia Floyd are able to spend more time together.

"She likes [to paint] rural scenes and I don't," Lisa Floyd said. "So I think we will complement each other."

In the lake area and the Roanoke Valley, the Floyds also have designed murals at Fallon's Restaurant, the Bedford Chamber of Commerce, Cup A Joe in Bedford and the Ronald McDonald House.
