State Park

Smith Mountain Lake State Park is situated on the second largest body of water in Virgina, but it offers much more than sailing and skiing. State park events are listed here. For reservations and information, call 1-800-933-PARK or visit the park's Web site.

Fishing

Smith Mountain Lake is one of the top-rated fisheries in the country, consistently producing some of Virginia's largest freshwater stripers, including the current Virginia state record of 49 pounds, 4 ounces. In spring and late fall, the stripers move to the shallows to feed on shad and other baitfish. This is prime time for fishing Smith Mountain Lake and for finding off-season prices on lodging.

In addition to stripers, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, blackmouth bass, crappie, catfish, walleyes, and muskellunge call the lake home. Hopeful anglers must procure a Virginia state fishing license. Click here for more fishing-related information or visit our Outdoors section.

Golfing

Smith Mountain Lake is a paradise for golfers of every skill level.

There are five hiking trails at the state park, each under two miles in length. The Chestnut Ridge and Turtle Island trails are open year-round. Others are open on a seasonal basis.
