Moneta church to aid Katrina homeowner

Bethlehem United Methodist Church is raising money to build a house for a disabled woman who lost her home to Hurricane Katrina.

The church is raising $25,000 for the project. Church members are being sent out in work teams to Mississippi beginning this month.

Jeanie Lowery, 52, has lived in a FEMA cottage since Hurricane Katrina razed her house. She will lose the cottage on April 1, 2009. Lowery receives $352 in disability per month. She also has applied for an additional $200 from Social Security.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief and Bethlehem UMC are seeking additional support from churches and individuals in the lake area. Several churches already have pledged support with funds and/or work teams, including Resurrection Catholic Church, Trinity Ecumenical Parish and Main Street United Methodist Church in Bedford.

To pledge support, call Rick Carroll, Bethlehem mission team chair at (540) 484-3100 or David Lord, Bethlehem pastor at (540) 297-7957.
