Following is a brief description of a few of the educational options in the Valley.
Public School Systems
ROANOKE CITY SCHOOLS

- Roanoke City offers a wide variety of specialized programs to meet the needs of each student. Special programs include 32 Magnet School options which offer the basic curriculum along with a specialized program of study in the student's interest area, the Challenge Program an enrichment program for gifted 6-8th grade students, and a Dual Enrollment Program allowing AP students to take classes at Virginia Western for college credit. More than 45 percent of administrators and teachers hold advanced degrees. Student achievement for grades 4, 8 and 11 as measured by the Virginia State Assessment Program show improvement over the last year's scores at all grade levels.
ROANOKE COUNTY SCHOOLS

- Roanoke County consistently places among the top school systems in Virginia in national achievement test scores. It offers a wide range of gifted, special, vocational programs as well as an adult education program which serves more than 4,500 students per year. Afterschool programs in art and music enrichment and reading and math tutoring are offered at the elementary level.
SALEM CITY SCHOOLS

- Salem City takes pride in maintaining a community-supported small-town system while providing an excellent comprehensive program for its students. Salem students consistently place above the average on national achievement tests, and teachers' salaries rank near the top 10 in the state.
BOTETOURT COUNTY SCHOOLS

- Botetourt County offers a comprehensive academic and vocational program. Afterschool directed study programs and advanced placement courses are available, as well as a wide range of extracurricular and athletic opportunities. Approximately 73% of graduating seniors seek higher education. Programs for the academically advanced student and alternative education programs are offered for all students.
FRANKLIN COUNTY SCHOOLS

- The mission of Franklin County schools is to prepare students for future education and employment. All instructional programs are guided by the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Averett's Adult Curriculum for Excellence is founded upon the understanding that learning is a lifelong process which is not confined to a traditional campus environment. The adult curriculum provides valuable educational experiences to working adults whose access to higher education may be otherwise restricted or non-existent. The curriculum for the AACE program is presented in a modular format. Averett offers a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration program. - Hollins University: North of Roanoke on U.S. 11, is a private, liberal arts college for women. Offers 26 majors and study abroad on four continents. - Mary Baldwin College: The center, at 920 S. Jefferson St., Suite 309, offers a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree to men and women through its adult degree program. Majors include business administration, health care administration, English, history, psychology and sociology. Teacher licensure is also available. Evening and weekend classes are held at the Roanoke center or course offerings on an independent basis are also available. This location has 200 students. $282 per semester hour. - National Business College: 1813 E. Main St., Salem, is a proprietary, accredited career college that offers diploma and associate degrees and four-year programs in a variety of fields. - Radford University: About 40 miles west of Roanoke, is state-supported and coeducational. This four-year public university maintains colleges in Business and Economics, Education and Human Development, Nursing and Health Services, Visual and Performing Arts, and the Graduate College. - Roanoke College: Downtown Salem, Virginia. 4-year Private, Lutheran church-related, liberal arts, coeducational. - Roanoke Valley Graduate Center: 117 Church Ave. S.W. in downtown Roanoke. Graduate courses offered by five institutions, including Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Radford University, Old Dominion University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Programs offered include: master of arts in counselor education (Tech); master of business administration (Tech and Radford); master of engineering (Tech, UVa, ODU, VCU); master of public administration (Tech); master of education in instruction (UVa); master of science in educational leadership (Radford); master of information science (UVa in cooperation with University of Tennessee) and master of criminal justice (Radford). - University of Virginia Roanoke Center: Part of the university's Division of Continuing Education, the center serves more than 2,500 citizens from the Roanoke region annually. It provides master's degrees, teacher re-licensure courses, professional development seminars, and customized training for organizations. $141-226 per semester hour. - Virginia Military Institute: in Lexington, about 50 miles north of Roanoke on I-81, is a four-year military academy that offers the same programs as regular universities with the addition of military discipline and training. There is no commitment to military service upon graduation unless the student is on an ROTC scholarship. - Virginia Tech: in Blacksburg, about 35 miles west of Roanoke, is a coeducational, state-supported comprehensive research university offering bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The university has colleges of Business, Education, Engineering, Architecture, Arts and Sciences, and Urban and Regional Planning. It is one of the largest universities in Virginia with enrollment of about 24,812, mostly full time. Tuition: $7,953 (Va. residents); $15,169 (non-Va. residents) + room and board fees. - Virginia Western Community College: 3095 Colonial Ave., S.W., Roanoke, part of the state's public system of 23 two-year colleges, offers associate and professional/technical degree programs. Shorter-term certificates also available to upgrade or learn new job skills. Has a cooperative arrangement with the engineering department of VaTech. Greatly enlarged relationship with Radford University, with a Radford representative on campus. Bachelor's degree in social work from Radford and bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical and civil engineering technology from Old Dominion University available on campus. Has working relationships with Ferrum, Virginia Commonwealth, and Virginia State universities, and Hollins and Roanoke colleges. Enrollment is more than 7,800.
