All staff written articles and photos appearing in The Roanoke Times and on roanoke.com are copyrighted by The Roanoke Times. Content may not be republished, reproduced, displayed, transmitted or broadcast without prior written permission from The Roanoke Times.

The only exception to this is material for personal, non-commercial use. No more than 5 digital copies or 5 print copies per page may be downloaded from roanoke.com or photocopied from the pages of The Roanoke Times for personal, non-commercial use, provided all copyrights are kept intact.

The Roanoke Times does not own the copyright to everything that appears in the newspaper, e.g., we do not own the copyright to syndicated columns, comics or wire service articles. For those requests, you must contact the syndicate or wire service for reprint rights.

If you desire to republish a story written or photo taken by The Roanoke Times, you must completely fill out the form titled “Request for rights to reprint” and send it to the person noted at the top of the form. Requests sent via email will not be accepted.

Please keep in mind that permission to reprint is for one-time use only and that there is a fee. Any subsequent reprints must be submitted for approval and/or additional licensing fees. Articles must be reprinted in full. Articles and photos may not be manipulated in any way. Editing of any kind is prohibited.

For reprinting photographs

  • Reprint permission is normally given only for those photographs published in The Roanoke Times one year prior to the date reprint request is received. Other requests will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Once permission is granted and payment received, the newspaper will send requested photo to client within 7 business days. Photos will be emailed as a .jpeg image. NO PRINTS WILL BE MAILED.

For reprinting content online

  • Please include the URL, or internet address, when filling out the “Request for rights to reprint” form.
  • Reprint permission is good for one year only. You must reapply if you’d like to continue posting the article on your site.
  • Articles must be reprinted in full. Editing of any kind is prohibited.
  • All reprints posted online must contain a link to www.roanoke.com as well as a copyright to The Roanoke Times and the year of publication (ie. copyright 2005, The Roanoke Times).

We do not supply facsimile copies of articles

The Roanoke Times does not supply facsimile copies of articles. Once permission has been granted, if you need a copy of an article, please access our online archives at roanoke.com/archives. You may also call our customer service department at 800-346-1234 ext. 497 for back issues of papers published no more than 30 days ago.

Pricing notes

  • There is no charge for non-profit groups/organizations or educational institutions.
  • The minimum price for any for-profit group/organization is $100 per article or photo. Multiple reprint requests may result in a discount.
  • Please do not send payment with your request. If permission is granted, The Roanoke Times will contact you regarding charges and payment information. All payments must be made with a credit card.

Frequent reasons for denial

The Roanoke Times reserves the right to deny reprint rights to or revoke reprint rights from any organization for any reason.

We generally do not give reprint permission for:

  • Sales, marketing, or promotion, including communication to current or potential clients.
  • Fundraising.
  • Any request that may be political in nature, as an endorsement for any political candidate, any side of a political debate, or any organization with a political mission.
