Utz, one of a number of women who transferred to VMI from New Mexico Military Institute, is a first lieutenant in the Army, serving as an intelligence officer at Fort Lewis, Wash. She graduated from VMI in May 2000.

At VMI, Utz distinguished herself by being one of the first two women to join the training cadre, a group of loudmouthed, well-starched drill-instructor types charged with browbeating rats into a military unit.
