Lord was due to graduate this May with her classmates, but resigned unexpectedly in November for what a VMI official called "personal reasons."

Lord, a cross-country runner and one of VMI's first female cheerleaders, could not be reached for comment. Her longtime roommate, Ebony McElroy, said Lord has applied for readmission to VMI, and hopes to join McElroy for summer school in a few weeks.

Of the first 30 women at VMI, only Lord and McElroy will be at the school this fall.
