VMI graduate killed near Camp Anaconda in Iraq

Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday lost its fourth alumnus to the war in Iraq.
Army Maj. Paul Syverson III was killed in action near Camp Anaconda in Iraq, according to a VMI news release.
Syverson grew up in Illinois and was a 1993 graduate of VMI. He was assigned to the Fifth Special Forces Group.
He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his role in stopping a prison revolt in Afghanistan in 2001. He was scheduled to return home from Iraq shortly.
New Jersey National Guard Spec. Ryan Doltz, 26, of Mine Hill, N.J., and VMI's class of 2002, died earlier this month.
Army Lt. Josh Hurley of Clifton Forge and VMI's class of 2001 died in November.
Army Capt. John Teal of Richmond and the VMI class of 1994 died in October.
All three were killed by improvised explosive devices.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Beach reservist and a Virginia Military Institute alumnus were among three soldiers killed Wednesday in a mortar attack on a logistical base at Balad Air Base in Iraq, Defense Department officials announced Friday.
Three 127 mm rockets hit the camp about 50 miles north of Iraq, base officials said, including one direct hit on the base exchange. The military convenience store was filled with shopping troops.
The Department of Defense announced the identities of the three soldiers late Friday. They were:
-Spc. Jeremy M. Dimaranan, 29, of Virginia Beach, who was assigned to the Army Reserve's 302nd Transportation Company, 172nd Combat Support Group, Fort Eustis, Va.
-Maj. Paul R. Syverson III, 32, of Lake Zurich, Ill., who graduated from VMI in 1993. Syverson was assigned to the Army's 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Ky.
-Sgt. Arthur S. Mastrapa, 35, of Apopka, Fla., who was assigned to the Army Reserve's 351 Military Police Company, 95th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade, Ocala, Fla.
