Jennifer Short's remains exhumed from her grave

Jennifer Renee Short's remains were exhumed from her grave last week as part of an ongoing investigation into her murder, the Henry County Sheriff's Office said.

Nine-year-old Jennifer was kidnapped Aug. 15, 2002, from her Oak Level home, where her parents, Michael and Mary Short, were found shot to death. Jennifer's remains were found Sept. 25, 2002, in Rockingham County, N.C., under a bridge that was named in her memory a year later.

Capt. Kimmy Nester of the Henry County Sheriff's Office said Jennifer's remains were exhumed Sept. 30 "for forensic purposes" and were returned to their resting place Oct. 1. He declined to say whether the exhumation provided any new clues in the case.

Nester said a legal court order was obtained before the exhumation and that Jennifer's family members were notified before it took place.
