During the Christmas season we have some traditions we celebrate. My favorite tradition is the pickle. It is when you take a pickle ornament and hide it in the Christmas tree. The first person to find it gets an extra present. Another tradition we have is getting a Christmas tree. Every year we go get a Christmas tree. We put it up that night, but we decorate it the next day. When we do get a tree it has to be big, because we have so many ornaments. These are some of our traditions. Do you celebrate any of these?
Sydney Varney, second grade
This year my family is starting a new tradition. My mom hides an ornament that looks like a pickle. On Christmas Eve, whoever finds the pickle gets an extra surprise.

My dad, mom, sister and I go hunting for Thanksgiving food. Here is the food we hunt: turkey and rabbit. For Christmas my family puts ramps at the end of the hill. Then we sled down the hill. We go up on the ramp and go up really high into the air.

My favorite tradition that is unique to my family is the river trip every Thanksgiving to the Rappahannock River. At the river, we have jet-skis, rafts, sand buckets, basketballs and goals, and also water balloons. Almost every day we go tubing behind the jet-skis. Then after that we just ride the jet-skis without the tube. Finally, we would go in the house for supper and to watch a movie. The next day we build sand castles with the buckets, and we also go tubing and ride jet-skis. We always have fun.
Jared Montgomery, second grade
Every year on Christmas day, my family makes snow sculptures of each other (if it snowed). Whoever makes the best gets snowballs thrown at it. The person with the worst gets a candy cane. Everyone draws a name from a hat. Which name you get is the person (or animal) you make. If you get your name, you have to make a sculpture of yourself with a different or strange haircut. Sometimes we will make each other look funny. We will give each other a big nose or weird eyebrows and tease each other with it. It is fun!
Haley Doss, second grade

My favorite tradition happens during Christmas. During that holiday my mommy and I sing “Silent Night.” We do that because it is the song that Jesus’ parents sang to him when he was born. Christmas is the holiday that we put the angel on top of the tree. My mommy named the angel after me, Desiree. The angel has been in my family since I was a baby. My favorite tradition is silly to my brother; however, it is great to me. Christmas traditions are cool.

I really like Christmas. Jesus was born on Christmas day. Everybody should love Jesus. I do. My sister and I love presents. We get a lot of presents and we also enjoy them. I see my family every year for Christmas. I really like it. I go sledding every year with my sister. We always have fun together. I like having fun at Christmas.

One of the reasons I like Christmas is that Jesus was born on that day. I also like Christmas because you get presents. On Christmas day your parents love you. Jesus loves us all. A lot of joy is going around on Christmas day. But Jesus gives you the most joy.

Togetherness
My family has many Christmas traditions. Christmas is my favorite time of the year. It’s because my cousin gets to spend the night. We always get to open a present on Christmas Eve. After that we go to my grandma’s. I love to go to my grandma’s. First we eat the food we all fixed. Next we open presents. After that we go home and go to bed. I have so many more Christmas traditions than this. Merry Christmas!

I have some Christmas traditions. On Christmas Eve we go to my aunt and uncle’s house. We open a present from a parent. We play with it until we go to bed. Every Christmas we go to my Moni and papa’s house to see family. We eat a big meal. All the women cook. The men set the table. The kids sort the presents. We talk to each other and have a lot of fun. At the end of the day we go home. I go home feeling loved and happy.

On Thanksgiving, we all get together at a family member’s house. When my uncle gets there, we play games like checkers, tag, Uno and lots of other games. Then it is time to eat, but we say the blessing first. After the blessing, we eat lots of food. We eat so much that we can’t eat any more. My mom loves to make stuff, so sometimes we make a card for everyone that’s there. Sometimes people leave early so we say goodbye to the ones that are leaving. After that we get cheesecake and ice cream. That is my Thanksgiving. The best one, too!

Christmas is the best holiday in the world! Do you know what the weather is like? The weather is snow. Christmas is about getting together and giving joy. At Christmas, you can drink hot cocoa and eat good food like s’mores, popcorn and chocolate.

I like Christmas because you can get presents from Santa Claus. My favorite part is decorating our house and tree and putting the angel on top. I also like making ornaments with my family. I also like spending time with my cousins. These are some the things I love about Christmas.

Damon Camden, second grade
My favorite part of Christmas is family time. I get to hang out with my family. Every Christmas we do Christmas carols. My favorite Christmas carol is “Silent Night.” An important part about Christmas is Jesus’ birthday. I get to go to my grandparents’ house to eat lots of food. I read a Bible all day long. Some of my friends come over to celebrate. It’s fun! A drink I drink is hot chocolate and chai. I put fluff in my hot chocolate. It tastes great! Read a book with hot chocolate. When you run out of hot chocolate, get Chai tea. Put a lot of cinnamon in the chai. Chai will put you to sleep. These are the reasons I like Christmas.

On Christmas Eve I go to my grandma’s. We eat and open gifts and let off fireworks. Then Mom, Dad and I go home, then we go to sleep. In the morning I wake up or my dad gets me up so we can open presents. Then my mom makes breakfast. I eat then go to my other grandparents’. Last year at my other grandparents’ my dad got a lottery tickets and won $2.

On Christmas and Christmas Eve, my family and I visit friends and relatives. On Christmas Eve, grandparents come to our house and we hang our beautiful ornaments and stockings, listen to Christmas music like “Jingle Bells” and watch old movies. My brother and I always wear matching pajamas on Christmas. On Christmas morning, we alternate opening gifts and give hugs, kisses and thank yous to the people who gave them to us. Then we check to see if Santa ate his cookies and drank his milk. Finally, we have a special breakfast and sadly say goodbye.

My family’s holiday tradition is each person can choose a holiday to host at their home. For example, my aunt has the holiday of New Year’s Eve. So when it is New Year’s Eve we go to her house. There is a trick, though. She cannot have New Year’s Eve next year so she will have to pick a different holiday.
