Amherst County 38,

William Fleming 20

Amherst coach Scott Abell and his staff saw plenty of William Fleming's Dere Hicks on film.

"Nobody got pressure on him,"Abell said of the slippery senior quarterback.

The Lancers decided to change that. Sending a five-man rush on nearly every play, Amherst County chased Hicks all over the field and disrupted the Colonels offense enough to capture a 38-20 victory in the opening round of the Region III Division 4 playoffs in Amherst.

The loss ended William Fleming's season, a year after the Colonels (7-4) advanced to the state finals.

"I'm very disappointed," Hicks said. "After last year, I thought we could go all the way. We just came up short.

"It was a team effort. Sometimes things just happen."

Amherst County will host Salem on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Spartans beat Liberty 22-14.

Amherst running back Jonathan Rose posted his first 200-yard game, running for 215 yards and two touchdowns as the Lancers (10-1) ran for 331 yards.

"All year I've been saying I wanted 200 yards and all day [Friday] I was talking about it," Rose said.
